Small Change takes payments and donations through Stripe. We built it for charities, churches and small organisations that need to take gifts and sell a handful of things, but can't justify the cost and weight of Craft Commerce.

It is intentionally more lightweight that Craft Commerce as intended for sites that want a limited amount of ecommerce and payment options.

You can try it on the live demo, which is in Stripe's test mode. You also get access to the control panel on the demo site to see some of the options provided.

Features

  • One-off and recurring donations. Suggested amounts, a minimum, and an amount of the donor's own choosing. Monthly or yearly gifts are Stripe subscriptions, so Stripe owns the schedule and the card.
  • Donors manage their own gift. There are no donor accounts. A donor asks for a signed link by email, which opens Stripe's customer portal to change their card or stop giving.
  • Gift Aid as an option. For charities in the UK - there is built in Gift Aid options built in.
  • A basket for products. Physical products that are delivered, and non-physical ones such as tickets and memberships, with SKUs, a basket and Stripe Checkout.
  • Delivery and discount codes. Flat-rate delivery methods, limited to countries if you like. Percentage or fixed discount codes with a minimum spend, dates and a usage limit that is held while someone is paying.
  • Your own questions. Checkout fields for basket orders and separate donation fields for donors, designed with Craft's field layout designer.
  • Templates you own. Install the donation and shop pages into your own layout as plain HTML with minimal vanilla JavaScript, then change them as you like.
  • A field and a block. Editors choose a product or a donation form on any page with a Small Change Products field, with no shop page needed.
  • Webhooks are the source of truth. Signatures are checked, every event is stored, and duplicates and out-of-order delivery are handled. A button registers the endpoint with Stripe.
  • Receipts and notices. Ten emails, including a receipt for every payment, with wording you can change in the control panel and templates you can restyle. Each can be switched off.
  • Refunds and disputes. Partial refunds from the order, checked against what is left. Refunds made in the Stripe Dashboard are picked up, and a dispute marks the order and emails you.
  • Works behind Blitz. Pages that show something personal are kept out of caches automatically, and the forms that can be cached use a CSRF partial.
  • Privacy built in. Abandoned baskets and old Stripe events are cleaned up for you, completed orders can be anonymised on a schedule, and a donor can be erased from an order or the command line.
  • Made for developers. A Twig variable, events across the lifecycle, console commands and a permission for each kind of action.

What it doesn't do

Doing less than Craft Commerce is the point. Small Change doesn't do tax or VAT, stock, product variants, multiple currencies, carrier-calculated shipping, customer accounts of its own or gift cards. If you need any of those, you'll likely want Craft Commerce.

Requirements

  • Craft CMS 5.0 or later
  • PHP 8.2 or later
  • MySQL 8 or PostgreSQL 13 or later
  • A Stripe account (a free sandbox is enough to start)
